Memories of Tiantan | Memorable Time of A “Composer of the People”

  Lead:

Here are the memories of Tiantan Award. Today, we will bring you to the turbulent days of World War II, getting a close contact with the memorable time of a musician who desired to return to his motherland. That is The Composer, a shortlisted film of the 9th Beijing International Film Festival Tiantan Award. This time, Jonathan Shen, the Sponsor, Presenter and General Producer of this film, will share with us the connotation of The Composer.

The Composer, as the first Sino-Kazakhstani co-produced film, tells the story about Xian Xinghai, a famous composer and pianist in modern China, who had to stay in the Soviet Union due to the war. During last several years of his lifetime, he was still devoted to composition to express his solicitude for his motherland.

In 1940, Xian Xinghai was entrusted by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to the Soviet Union for the soundtrack and post-production of the documentary Yan'an and the Eighth Route Army. However, due to the outbreak of the  Great Patriotic War , the production of the documentary came to a halt, and Xian Xinghai himself was forced to move and stay in Almaty. When he was in despair, the famous Kazakh musician Bakhitzhan Baikadamov and his family helped him selflessly. And, in return, he used music to express his gratitude to the Kazakh people. Based on the exploits of Kazakh national hero Amangeldy, Xian Xinghai wrote a symphonic Amangeldy  to inspire the Kazakh people to fight back against fascist invaders.

Xian Xinghai, who had to stay in a foreign country, left no stone unturned to return to his motherland, to Yan'an, and to his wife and daughter. But the war hindered him from doing so. Missing his homeland, he could express his patriotism and nostalgia only through music. Unfortunately, until the last moment of his life, he still failed to return to China.

For the experience of directing The Composer, Director Xierzati Yahefu sincerely stated that this is an unforgettable process. “Eight decades ago, the Yellow River Cantata sounded on the land of China, and then echoed in Kazakhstan. Xian Xinghai used music to build a bridge for spiritual communication between the people of China and Kazakhstan, and highlighted the common destiny of human beings with the sound of passionate music.” General Producer Jonathan Shen believes that The Composer is a work full of respect and emotion. "We hope that through this film, the great people of Kazakhstan can feel the sincere tribute from China. The year of 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the first performance of Yellow River Cantata in Yan'an. We can also know about the last years of Xian Xinghai's brilliant life through the film and express our respect for the People's Musician."
