Guide to Online Application for 9th BJIFF Beijing Market Project Pitches

  The 9th BJIFF Beijing Market will be held at Beijing International Hotel from April 16th to 19th, 2019, and the application for project pitches will end on March 3rd. To date, the BJIFF Beijing Market has received many emails consulting about project pitches. To help project applicants better understand the situation, we hereby answer the frequently asked questions as follows.

  

  What films qualify for project pitches?

  Feature films with complete filmable screenplays and 5,000-word synopses;

  Films for which shooting has not started and financing is not yet over;

  Projects that have not participated in other film markets or not involved in project pitches are preferred;

  Film projects with potential to be released in China as well as great market potential;

  Film projects of commercial or artistic value. 

  

  What films qualify for WIPs?

  Fiction feature films that have been identified for the record and have been granted shooting permits;

  Feature films with complete filmable screenplays (For English screenplays, Chinese translation is required) and 5,000-word synopses.

  Film projects for which the shooting, production or post-production is in process, and financing or cooperation with promotion and distribution resources is still required;

  Film projects that have already had directors, producers, and production companies, and will start shooting no later than February 28, 2019; 

  Film projects with complete production budgets, shooting plans, and complete project proposals;

  15-minute movie clips (with online links for viewing and passwords) should be provided;

  Overviews (within 200 words) of the project stages are required;

  Film projects with potential to be released in China as well as great market potential;

  Film projects of commercial or artistic value.

  

  What are the application procedures?

  Submit all required project materials.

  

  Are there any restrictions on project subjects or types? Is there an age limit for applicants?

  The BJIFF Beijing Market project pitches impose no restrictions on project subjects or types, and do not have an age limit for applicants. 

  

  When I apply for a project pitch, what does the option of WIP mean?

  WIP stands for Work In Progress. It is an addition to the present BJIFF. WIPs are project pitches that have started production and require further financing.

  

  May one applicant apply for more than one project?

  One applicant may apply for more than one project. The applicant needs to register multiple accounts and applies for the projects one by one. 

  

  What is the review process for a project to become a finalist?

  A project pitch needs to go through a preliminary review, a second review and interview (early April), the final review and roadshow (mid-April) to become a finalist. 

  

  How to keep track of the progress of project review?

  After verifying the completeness and accuracy of project information and materials, the BJIFF Beijing Market Department will send a confirmation email notifying the applicant that the project has entered the review process. If the project information and materials do not meet the application requirements, the BJIFF Beijing Market Department will notify the project applicant by mail or phone, and review the resubmitted information and materials. All project application materials must be submitted by March 3, 2019. 

  

  How do I know if my project is a finalist?

  After the BJIFF official media announces the finalists, the BJIFF Beijing Market Department will contact each project applicant as per the “Applicant/Contact” information in the application form. A project not confirmed in time will be deemed as abandoned, and will be replaced by another project next on the list. Therefore, make sure to leave your valid email address and phone number in the application form.

  

  What are you supposed to do after your project becomes a finalist?

  Prepare a presentation and a speech that will last 15 minutes in total;

  Participate in "project pitch" roadshows, roadshow training, rehearsals, etc.;

  Set aside 2 days for one-on-one business negotiations. 

  

  What awards are there for the finalists?

  1 Special Award;

  1 Greatest Commercial Potential Award;

  1 Best Original Script Award;

  1 Best Creativity Award;

  1 Most Investment Value Project Award (WIP category);

  1 Most Potential Production Team Award (WIP category);

  1 Most Market Focus Award.

  All finalists will be awarded the title of “Best Project Pitch”.
