Fearless When Committed to Dreams
As the Spring Festival period continues to heat up with release dates of the Where the Wind Blows, The Procurator and Journey to the West among other films announced, various genres of films are revitalizing the film market. While the year of the tiger draws to a close, the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) Project Pitches has received many good news, and many projects and young filmmakers have achieved great outcomes in 2022. Continuous industry hot topics will undoubtedly boost confidence of the film market in 2023. We are fearless when committed to dreams. Let’s look forward to another spring in the film industry.

The Cord of Life, winner of the “Special Award” of the 10th BJIFF Project Pitches, won the Best Artistic Contribution Award at the Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIFF) Competition on December 24, 2022, another win at an international film festival since it was shortlisted in the Asian Future Section of the 35th Tokyo International Film Festival, and Lotus Award Competition at the World Film Festival of Bangkok for the film produced by Cao Yu and Yao Chen, written and directed by young director Qiao Sixue. 
The Similars (formerly known as Between Each Other), shortlisted in the 11th BJIFF Project Pitches, has completed production. In order to better present every character in the film, director Liu Peng, majored in Performing Arts, started preparation for the project in the beginning of 2022. He confirmed the cast half a year in advance so as to ensure actors and actresses can get into their characters. The shooting was smoothly launched in June, 2022. The product was finally completed in the beginning of 2023 after a year of teamwork and arduous efforts. Director Liu plans to submit the project for the WIP category of the 13th BJIFF Project Pitches in the hope for better results.
Where Echoes Never End, shortlisted in the WIP category of the 12th BJIFF Project Pitches, has completed production. It tells the story of how a young and brave people relays love through organ donation. The project ushered into a new stage as the New Year arrived. Currently, its post-production is completed. The project is looking for a like-minded team for joint marketing and distribution.
The BJIFF has achieved remarkable results since hosting of the Project Pitches more than ten years ago. Approximately 100 projects were fully matched with the industry via BJIFF’s platform. At the same time, many representative young filmmakers succeed in going to the market from the BJIFF.
Lost in the Stars is the second film directed by Liu Xiang, director of the winning film Knock Knock for the “Team with Greatest Potential Award” at the 10th BJIFF Project Pitches. It’s premiered as the closing film of the 4th HIFF. Produced by Chen Sicheng, directed by Cui Rui and Liu Xiang, starring Zhu Yilong, Ni Ni, Janice Man and Du Jiang, it was well received on the site. Rising from the Project Pitches to the market, director Liu Xiang has been fully committed to the genre that he’s familiar with and good at, and has gained market interest with his distinctive directing style.
Get Better Day by Day, directed by Zhao Siying, won the “Special Award” at the 11th BJIFF Project Pitches and RMB 10,000 prize from Warner Media. Director Zhao attracted attention from Wanda’s Elite + Project in the final-round pitching for her excellent performance, and signed the project as a director in February 2022. She was engaged in films and TV series developed by Wanda. At present, Zhao Siying is working on her own project development. We look forward to her participation in the BJIFF Project Pitches again with her new film soon!
Everyone was either lost or in hurry in the past 2022. But we are always in pursuit of our passion and goals. The Project Pitches of the 13th BJIFF Beijing Film Market in 2023 will continue to discover filmmaking talents with creative potential and excellent projects with Chinese characteristics. A warm spring is coming. This edition of Project Pitches will be held offline. So will the business negotiation for outstanding shortlisted projects during the BJIFF. The Project Pitches of the 13th BJIFF Beijing Film Market is now open for entries. Projects and WIP projects may submit application via the official website of the BJIFF. The deadlines for projects and WIP projects are March 3, 2023 and March 10, 2023 respectively.
