Tiantan Award Preview: Ahead of the Official Selection Announcement, We Spoke with the Jury Members

Published Time:2026-03-05
Before the Official Selection of Tiantan Award is unveiled, audiences often find themselves wondering: what kind of stories have been chosen this time?

The answer may lie in the perspective guiding the selection process. It is neither an austere adherence to auteur theory nor a purely market-driven commercial calculation. Instead, the festival consistently looks to the space where artistic expression meets audience appeal, seeking out films that not only deliver striking cinematic impact but also resonate on a deeply human level.
What kind of films come into view under such a standard? In fact, the guiding principle is disarmingly simple: a film must first and foremost be compelling to watch. The final selections must be distinctive enough to feel fresh and original, yet representative enough to reflect a facet of the times we live in. After all, a film festival is not solely an event for industry insiders - it belongs to everyone who loves cinema.
Selection criteria on paper may sound abstract, but the films honored in past editions offer the clearest illustration. Every film recognized by the Tiantan Award has embodied this philosophy in its own way:
Loveable reached the most intricate layers of human emotion through restrained, minimalist storytelling, allowing audiences to see their own experiences reflected in its finely drawn portrayal of feeling.

Gold or Shit offered an unvarnished look at the realities of contemporary youth, capturing the anxieties and uncertainties of a generation and allowing viewers to find their own sense of resonance in its rhythm of moving forward, stopping and starting again.

Fast & Feel Love deftly blended the pace of competitive sport with the delicacy of emotional storytelling, exploring - beyond speed and spectacle - the most genuine bonds between people.

These films have earned recognition because they speak in the universal language of cinema, telling stories that transcend borders and belong to audiences everywhere.

The selection process for the Official Selection of Tiantan Award at the 16th Beijing International Film Festival has now reached a preliminary conclusion. In conversations with the jury members, one theme emerged repeatedly: while audiences look at the lineup and see a list of titles, the jury members see something else entirely - a snapshot of what filmmakers around the world have been thinking about, and what they have chosen to put on screen over the past year.
“After reviewing this year’s submissions, one impression came through very clearly: many filmmakers are searching for a way to connect with the present moment. A significant number of directors have turned their cameras toward today’s young people and toward the changes taking place in Chinese society. These films are not preachy, nor do they try to make a point in an obvious way - the stories simply grow naturally out of the environments in which they are set. We are particularly keen to see works of this kind - films that allow international audiences to see a genuine face of China, and to understand the state of this generation of young people, whether marked by anxiety or by idealism.”

“What struck me most about this year’s submissions is the breadth of genres. The lineup goes far beyond what people usually associate with so-called ‘festival films’. We saw strong entries across comedy, science fiction, historical drama, romance and family stories, among others. More importantly, within these genre frameworks, social issues are no longer treated as mere background. They are embedded in the lives of the characters themselves. From suspense narratives dealing with online harassment, to stories of female self-awakening within family conflict, to individual destinies shaped by historical upheaval, and philosophical reflections on human nature set in science-fiction worlds - these films translate grand social themes into personal struggles that feel immediate and tangible, allowing audiences to see themselves on screen, and to glimpse the spirit of the times.”

“Another notable impression this year is the willingness of many filmmakers to experiment. Some productions are made on modest budgets, with very simple settings - sometimes just a handful of people talking - yet through those conversations they manage to reveal an entire cross-section of society, and the emotional impact can be striking. Others take a more adventurous approach to editing, deliberately avoiding familiar formulas. The rhythm may feel unconventional, even unpredictable at times, but it follows its own internal logic. You can sense that these directors have a clear point of view and are not constrained by established conventions.”

“In terms of audiovisual language, this year’s submissions display an impressive range of styles. Some films are remarkable for the precision of their production design, costumes and props - so finely crafted that almost every frame could stand as a still image. Others show a particularly thoughtful approach to sound design: understated when necessary, but never hesitant when the emotional moment calls for it. We often joke among ourselves that films like these are ‘textbook examples’ - the kind that can serve as a model for the industry.”
- Jury Member L

“Acting is another standout this year. When we evaluate performances, we are not simply looking at whether an actor delivers a competent portrayal - that is the minimum expectation. What we hope to see is real transformation. There are performances where the actor seems completely unlike their usual screen persona, or where an apparently ordinary character is given unexpected depth. In those moments, the entire screening room falls silent, and everyone senses it at once: this is something special.”

Naturally, the selection process also involves its share of debate. Some members are drawn to works steeped in an Eastern sensibility, with especially delicate emotional expression, while others place greater emphasis on whether a film has the power to resonate across cultures. In the end, such differences of opinion are a sign of strength rather than conflict - they suggest that each film carries its own distinct artistic weight.

From these scattered fragments of light and shadow, one can already feel the strong pulse of this year’s Tiantan Award. The competition once again reflects a persistent search for the right balance between artistic expression and audience appeal, alongside a continuing focus on emotions shared across cultures. The lineup soon to be announced will not only mark a benchmark for the year in cinema, but also stand as a reflection of how filmmakers around the world are thinking about the present moment - and, in their own way, offering it meaning and comfort.
The suspense will soon be resolved, and the curtain is about to rise on this year’s festival.
