The Restored Classics Section Presents Must-see in Film History
By means of sophisticated complex artistic and technological processing, film restoration brings aged film frames alive, and keeps classics fresh. However, the restoration is not completed until audience watch the restored film on screen, and feel the unique old yet new charm. 
Every edition of the BJIFF “Beijing Film Panorama” collects and presents restored classics worldwide to the audience in honor of film history. This year, a number of restored classics will be screened, all of which are artistic masterpieces representative of the film history. Don’t miss them!
  Teahouse 
      2K restoration

Teahouse, representative work of Beijing People’s Art Theatre, was adapted to a film in 1982 by director Xie Tian. Roles, such as Shopkeeper Wang by Yu Shizhi, Qin Er Ye by Lan Tianye, Chang Si Ye by Zheng Rong, Song Er Ye by Huang Zongluo, and Liu Mazi by Ying Ruocheng, are unforgettable. On occasion of the 40th anniversary of its release, and the 70th anniversary of the founding of Beijing People’s Art Theatre, the “Beijing Film Panorama” specially presents the restored version to pay tribute to the classics by Lao She and Beijing People’s Art Theatre, and remember artist Lan Tianye who was just gone. The seniors have passed away, but their brilliance is well kept by cameras.
 
  Antoine Doinel Five Films
  4K restoration
On occasion of the 90th birthday of Fran?ois Truffaut, the leading figure of French New Wave, the 4K restored version of The Adventures of Antoine Doinel will be presented. The 400 Blows, Antoine and Colette, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board, and Love on the Run portrays the growth and uncertainty, sensitivity and rebellion of the classic role Antoine Doinel played by Jean-Pierre Léaud. The saga is not only a psychological autobiography of Fran?ois Truffaut, but also a portrait of the advent-garde bold times.
  The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
  4K restoration
Luis Bu?uel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is a masterpiece full of avant-garde imagination and unprecedented bold sarcasm of the society. The six leading actors and actresses present a hilarious yet saddening comedy. This year marks the 50th anniversary of its theatrical release, L'Image Retrouvée restored the film in 4K. Don’t miss the rare opportunity of the screening!
  A Man And A Woman
  2K restoration
In the midst of French New Wave, Claude Lelouch remained true to himself, and became one-of-a-kind director in France. In retrospect, he is a versatile and constantly active filmmaker. A Man And A Woman was the best film of the year: at the pinnacle of the French New Wave in 1966, the film won the Golden Palm at the Festival de Cannes over a number of works by New Wave directors. Francis Lai wrote one of the best known original sound tracks of romances. Leading actor Jean-Louis Trintignant passed away recently. Let’s revisit the classic and pay tribute to them.
  The Last Waltz 
     4K restoration
The Last Waltz, hailed as one of the greatest concert films of all time, was restored in 4K by Criterion Collection with the permission of director Martin Scorsese. It was selected for the Cannes Classics program at the Festival de Cannes 2022. The film keeps a vivid record of the legendary The Band’s farewell tour held in San Francisco in 1976 with featured performances by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Van Morrison, and other music legends.
  Ali: Fear Eats the Soul

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, European film legend in 1970s, died at the age of 37 but made more than 40 films in his 14-year directing experience. Almost all of them are masterpieces. On occasion of the 40th anniversary of his passing away, the section will present his most important masterpiece Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. Rumors are like knives that kill. Don’t miss the masterpiece of the gifted director!
  Nostalghia 4K restoration
The latest 4K restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia will also make a surprise appearance. The film was restored by the CSC-Cineteca Nazionale on the basis of negative footage provided by Rai Cinema S.p.A., and was just completed earlier this year. Audience in Beijing will have the opportunity to enjoy the international premiere of the film.
  Damnation 4K restoration
Béla Tarr, Hungarian treasured director, is a truly divine master of narratives. The restoration of his social allegory masterpiece Damnation in 4K will be presented. It’s restored by Hungarian National Film Institute and produced by himself. A dilapidated Hungarian town hides not only the sorrow and affection of a female singer, but also director’s scrutiny and expression about the society. 
  Black Girl 4K restoration
Black Girl is a representative work by Ousmane Sembene, father of African cinema. The film was jointly restored by World Cinema Project under the Film Foundation founded by Martin Scorsese, L’Immagine Ritrovata, Cineteca di Bologna, and other entities. It was selected for the Cannes Classics program. The restored film will make its debut in China at the BJIFF. The astounding New Wave film won the Jean Vigo Award for Best Feature Film. Amidst French New Wave, African filmmakers were using films to record their blood-shed history. You are able to find out the insurmountable chapter of African cinema through the restored film. 
  Oasis 4K restoration
Another film to be screened at the Beijing Film Panorama is the latest restored 4K version of the final chapter of Lee Chang-dong’s green color trilogy—Oasis. It features the most intense emotions and most unrestrained narrative out the three films. Leading actor Sol Kyung-gu and leading actress Moon So-ri presented stunning performance. You’ll be able to enjoy its restored version after exactly twenty years of its release.
  The Moon Has Risen 4K restoration
Actress Kinuyo Tanaka played over 250 films throughout her life, including films by Japanese masters like Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi. The Moon Has Risen, directed by her and written by Yasujiro Ozu, is a masterpiece rarely known. The film was restored from the original 35mm negative film preserved by Nikkatsu Corporation, and was selected for Cannes Classics program. The black and white film combines oriental female beauty and Yasujiro Ozu’s tenderness.
