Press Conference for 10th BJIFF Held

 On the morning of August 13, 2020, the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) and the Information Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality jointly held the Press Conference for the 10th BJIFF, unveiling the overall plan, features and highlights of the 10th BJIFF, cinema screening preparations, as well as the main poster and ambassador. Present were Yu Junsheng, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and President of Beijing Radio & Television Station and Vice Chairman & Secretary General of the Organizing Committee; Wang Jiequn, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Director of the Beijing Municipal Film Administration, Vice Chairman & Secretary General of the Organizing Committee; Xu Tao, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Chief Editor of Beijing Radio & Television Station and Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee; and Zhang Xiaoguang, Deputy Head of the China Film Archive, Deputy Director of the China Film Art Research Center and Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee.

  The 10th BJIFF will run from August 22 to 29, 2020. Based on the requirements of normalized epidemic prevention and control, integration, innovation and development, the 10th BJIFF, with the theme "In Pursuit of a Shared Dream", will take place online and offline, highlighting the features of the "Online BJIFF", and present activities such as Launch Ceremony, Beijing Film Panorama, Theme Forum, Beijing Film Market, Beijing College Student Film Festival, Film+ and Together Again, to deliver an upgraded film festival with highlights and innovative features.

Unique Style: "Launch Ceremony" Embodies Greater Influence

  As the beginning of the 10th BJIFF, the Launch Ceremony is unique. 8 masters from different film sectors, including Zhang Yimou, Chen Daoming, Huang Huilin, Sun Xianghui, Cao Yin, Fu Ruoqing, Yu Dong and Wu Jing, will be invited for speeches on Chinese films and the BJIFF. During the ceremony, a special program-"In Pursuit of a Shared Dream" produced by Beijing Radio & Television Station for the 10th BJIFF, will be presented. Through speeches, video clips and interviews, it will narrate filmmakers' thoughts and perseverance in creation, to express their firm confidence in the gradual recovery and prosperity of the industry. Renowned filmmakers and artists like Xie Fei, Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke, Tang Guoqiang, Wu Jing, Wu Gang, Wen Muye, Hai Qing, Du Jiang and Cai Xukun will meet the audience.

Major Breakthrough: "Beijing Film Panorama" Recreates Miracles

  "Beijing Film Panorama" has drawn close attention from the media and movie fans, and will achieve a breakthrough in content and form. Made up of Online Screenings, TV Screenings, Cinema Screenings and Outdoor Screenings, the activity will present over 300 outstanding Chinese and foreign films. For Online Screenings, about 250 films in 12 sections will be screened in a special BJIFF zone set up by iQIYI, the exclusive online screening platform of the BJIFF, including a record some 50 Chinese and foreign new films among domestic film festivals. For TV Screenings, 20 outstanding Chinese and foreign films will be screened in loop on Beijing Satellite TV, BTV Movie & TV Channel and BTV Youth Channel, marking the first time that 10 foreign films will be screened on domestic TV stations and films will hit TV screens during a domestic film festival. As a highlight of the 10th BJIFF, Outdoor Screenings will present 24 Chinese and foreign classics and quality new films such as Romance on Lushan Mountain and Undine. Charity screenings will present 500 screenings of about 30 films including My People, My Country, The Captain and Mao Zedong 1949 in 16 towns, townships and sub-districts of Huairou District.

  Cinema Screenings will present a selection of over 100 Chinese and foreign masterpieces. In terms of screening program planning, at the 10th anniversary of the BJIFF, "Beijing Film Panorama" has designed fresh sections while retaining popular classic sections, to offer an all new viewing experience.

"Beijing Film Panorama" features the following sections:

  "Official Selection of the 10th BJIFF" will screen the outstanding shortlisted films from those that have signed up for the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF); "The Films of éric Rohmer" aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of French film master éric Rohmer; "Restored Classics" which is highly favored by movie fans to showcase film restoration through cutting-edge technology, will present the masterpieces in the film history such as War and Peace and The Elephant Man; "Global View" brings together outstanding new films from around the world; "The Power of Chinese" will present great Chinese-language films including Damp Season and Wild Swords; “Hit IMAX Theatres" is added to the Beijing Film Panorama as a silver screen gift for movie fans, in which the audience can enjoy the ultimate audio-visual experience through IMAX, reliving the masterpieces in the film history; "VR Beijing" is set for the offline Beijing Film Panorama which continues to be upgraded to present a selection of the world’s top virtual reality film works; "Long Live the Movie" will present films like Cinema Paradiso and The Truth with an expectation to arouse new thinking and discussions on the movie history in the past and future; "Outlook", a new future-proof section, will present The Works and Days (of Tayoko Shiojiri in the Shiotani Basin), The Reunions, Honeyland and multiple other films that are groundbreaking and experimental in artistic style; "Women’s Voice" will present a group of Chinese and foreign films surrounding women’s lives and inner worlds such as Like the Dyer’s Hand, Only You Alone, and Wet Season, which focus on and record the distinct trends of the time. 

New Highlight: Beijing Film Market Creates Whole Industry Chain Ecology

  The Beijing Film Market of the 10th BJIFF will give full play to its role in industrial connection, to boost the film industry. It is made up of Exhibition, Project Pitches, Industry Conversations, Events & Activities and Contract Signing Ceremony. The Exhibition this year will go virtual as the first to use a 3D+VR exhibition system among domestic film festivals, and offer global film institutions free booths. The Project Pitches collected 829 projects this year, up 13 percent from last year, and these projects are superior in quality; renowned producer Chen Kuo-Fu, Yong Mei, winner of the Silver Bear for Best Actress, and well-known actor Deng Chao will constitute the jury for the final-round selection, which is believed to select the most promising new filmmakers and films. The Industry Conservations will take place at Boutique Guest House in Huairou District, Beijing with focus on hot topics such as "celebrity agent influence" and "the rise of Chinese young directors", and inject new power and vitality into Chinese and world films.

  The Beijing Film Market will organize a film preview salon for cinema managers in association with China Film Group Corporation and Huaxia Film Distribution, to present some key films. This is the first national film preview salon this year. The Contract Signing Ceremony will release a few films of significant themes like Critical Point and Poetry of Kids, and launch the Young Filmmaker Support Program of China Film Group Corporation.

Convincing Views: Theme Forums Look into Industry Forefront

  At the 10th anniversary of the BJIFF, the Organizing Committee planned 10 theme forums, including "Decade-long Devotion to Films — BJIFF 10th Anniversary Forum", "Sino-Foreign Film Co-Production Forum & Film Pitch", "Art Film Forum", "Summit on the Beauty of Film", "Development and Reform of Film in the Era of 5G", "International Academic Forum on Cinematic Arts", "Summit on the Development of Future Films" and "Chinese Film Industry Summit". About 80 industrial leaders, renowned filmmakers, experts and scholars will be invited to deliver keynote speeches on the new trend, direction and path of the film industry. The 10th BJIFF will also present the MPA Workshop with the participation of a host of overseas film institutions. Austrian female director Jessica Hausner, Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan and other celebrities will share their creative concepts and discuss issues such as industrial development.

Crossover Efforts to Build "Film +"

  To keep enhancing the role of culture in benefiting and educating people, and improve the degree of public participation, the 10th BJIFF has worked with social forces and market forces to build "Film +". Online and offline activities, such as Beijing Ethnic Film Festival, Science Film Section, Beijing Youth Film Festival, Chinese Opera Film Section, Animation Short Section, Youth Science Video Section, Online BJIFF-Class, Animation & Cartoon & Game Section, will enable more people to get involved and enjoy themselves.

Profound Relationship: "Together Again"

  "Together Again", a special program produced by Beijing Radio & Television Station for the 10th BJIFF, will bring together filmmakers via three sessions: "Reunion and Love", "Reunion and Departure" and "Future Reunion", to provoke filmmakers' new thoughts and reflections on films, showcase the outcomes of the 10th BJIFF, firm up the confidence and determination to promote Sino-foreign film culture exchange and the development of China's film industry, and invite domestic and foreign filmmakers, media and movie fans to participate in the 11th BJIFF. 

Characteristic Exhibitions: Ten-year Promise

  The BJIFF has gradually become mature over the decade. This year the Organizing Committee will also organize thematic activities such as BJIFF 10th Anniversary Forum, A Photo Exhibition: "Decade·Moments" and BJIFF 10th Anniversary Exhibition in cooperation with China National Film Museum. With a heart of gratitude, introspection and development, filmmakers will reflect on the interdependence between the BJIFF and Chinese films, the city of Beijing and movie fans, review the brilliance of Chinese films over the decade, witness the BJIFF's outcomes and carry the significance of "10th anniversary" throughout the 10th BJIFF. To filmmakers and movie fans, the "Ten-year Promise" is a history of films with a strong sense of ceremony and participation.

"Cloud BJIFF": An Everlasting Event

  The "Online BJIFF" is another highlight of the 10th BJIFF. Overseas guests will participate in events and activities online during the 10th BJIFF. We will create a 3D panoramic system on the BJIFF's official website, set up "online booths" for projects and films, and deliver the online edition of the "Beijing Film Market", to offer exhibitors and guests a digital, intelligent and efficient exchange and cooperation experience. The "Launch Ceremony", as well as special programs produced by Beijing Radio & Television Station – “In Pursuit of a Shared Dream" and "Together Again", will be broadcast on TV and the internet simultaneously, to build a new exchange platform for filmmakers. The newly-upgraded official website will provide more professional contents and services, and offer the audience more access to films, to develop the BJIFF from an event that takes place in a fixed city at a fixed time into an everlasting global film & TV event.

Wu Jing Appointed as Ambassador for 10th BJIFF

  Wu Jing, a renowned Chinese actor and director, will be the ambassador for the 10th BJIFF. He has developed his unique style and film patriotism. From him we can see the "fight" and "perseverance" of Chinese filmmakers in the new era, which highly tallies with the theme of the 10th BJIFF – “In Pursuit of a Shared Dream".

  From the Launch Ceremony, the special program "In Pursuit of a Shared Dream", the jury for the final-round selection in the Project Pitches, as well as the features and highlights of other events & activities, the 10th BJIFF will showcase Beijing's fruitful results in building of national cultural center and film & TV highland with a newer image and higher quality, stay true to its mission, keep to integrity and innovation, and deliver an more extraordinary, innovative and influential international film event at its 10th anniversary!
