Films crystallize art and technology. Every leap forward of films, from black and white to colors and 3D, from visual effects to motion capture, from 4:3 to 16:9, IMAX, Dolby, VR, AR, etc., would not be possible without innovation of science and technology. Hence, the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) has always kept its eyes on the impacts of technological development on the development of films. Since the inception of the VR Section in 2018, the BJIFF has aimed to build virtual boundaries for the audience in reality, and use VR and other advanced technologies as media to show the quality of art, through which film fans can see the continuous development from “small virtuality” to “big reality”, and feel the charm of films worldwide.

The VR Section is upgraded to XR Section in 2023 with a view to promoting outstanding XR films from home and abroad, discovering XR talents, and exploring the ultimate “immersion”. With a focus on the cutting-edge XR technologies and future trends, the section selects masterpieces from countries and regions. Screenings in the form of VR 360, interactive VR, VR gears, AR, MR and multiple media will be held to showcase XR filmmakers’ interpretation and expression of technology and art.
