Synopsis:During World War II in Nazi-occupied France, Gilles, a Belgian Jewish man, is arrested by the SS. He obtains a copy of Myths of Persia from another prisoner. When he is about to be executed, he claims that he is a Persian. The German soldiers then take him to the SS officer Klaus for a reward, because Klaus wants to learn Persian. In order to survive, Gilles lies that he's named Reza and is the original owner of the book Myths of Persia. Not knowing any Fasi, Gilles has to fabricate a language to maintain his identity. Inspired by the prisoners' name registration work he is assigned to, he borrows vowels and sounds from the names of the prisoners in the concentration camp to make up a language to teach Klaus. There are times when Klaus suspects that Gilles is a Jew and sends him to do hard labor, and when the female officer who's originally in charge of name registration and later replaced by Gilles and another male officer suspicious of Gilles' identity try to set Gilles up. After a series of narrow escapes and thanks to Gilles' friendship with other prisoners, Gilles manages to survive and become a confidant to Klaus. Before the German Nazi's defeat, Klaus lets Gilles out of the concentration camp and he himself is arrested by border control for speaking fake Persian as he tries to enter Iran, while Gilles, through his made-up language, is able to present the names of 2,840 Jewish victims to the Allies after the war.
