The 9th BJIFF-Chinese Films Forum for the 70th Anniversary Year of the People's Republic of China Held

  On the afternoon of April 14th, the 9th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF)-Chinese Films Forum for the 70th Anniversary year of the People's Republic of China took place at Ballroom, Beijing International Hotel, with the theme "70-year Development of Films, Walk into the New Era". Zhang Hong, Secretary of Party Leadership Group and Vice Chairman of the China Film Association (CFA); and Chen Mingjie, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Beijing Film Administration delivered addresses. Bi Wenyu, Deputy Secretary-General of CFA hosted the forum. Among other leaders and guests present were Wang Jue, Editor-in-Chief of Beijing TV Station, General Manager of Beijing Performance & Arts Group and Executive Deputy Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival; Yin Hong, Vice Chairman of CFA and Professor at Tsinghua University; Rao Shuguang, Director of the Film Art Center of CFLAC; Lu Shaoyang, President of the Film Review Committee, CFA, Professor at Peking University and Dean of the School of Journalism & Communication, Peking University; renowned directors Xie Fei, Lv Yue, Ning Hao and Frant Gwo, film educator Zhang Huijun, as well as film critics Chen Shan, Jia Leilei, Li Zhenlin, Wu Guanping and Nie Wei.

  As the first important theme forum after the Opening Ceremony of the 9th BJIFF, "70-year Development of Films, Walk into the New Era"-Chinese Films Forum for the 70th Anniversary year of the People's Republic of China includes Theme Speech, Director Forum, Critic Forum, 2018 "Choices of Critics" 10 Best Films, Release of The Report on Chinese Film Art 2019, etc. Based on the film development since the founding of the People's Republic of China over 70 years, the forum will review the past, look into the future, motivate Chinese filmmakers to keep going and discuss how to achieve the high-quality development of Chinese films.

  Rao Shuguang, Director of the Film Art Center of CFLAC and President of the China Film Critics Association delivered a keynote speech titled Inheritance and Innovation, Transformation and Integration. From a historical and aesthetic perspective, he systematically narrated the development of Chinese films over 70 years, strategically summarized the law of the development and changes of Chinese films, and dialectically analyzed film patterns in different historical periods, such as film culture inheritance in the People's Republic of China, film innovation in the new period, film transformation in the new century and film integration in the new era. His views were novel and insightful.

  Yin Hong, Professor at Tsinghua University, Vice Chairman of CFA and President of the Film Review Committee, CFA delivered a keynote speech titled Year of Realism for Chinese Films. He narrated the development and changes of Chinese films and indicated that the changes of the times are the soil for realistic creation, provoking profound thoughts among the audience.

  Then the forum held the Release Ceremony of The Report on Chinese Film Art 2019 and announced 2018 "Choices of Critics" 10 Best Films: Dying to Survive, Operation Red Sea, A Cool Fish, Shadow, Project Gutenberg, Hidden Man, Ash Is Purest White, Ala Changso, Wrath of Silence and Lost, Found. Prof. Lu Shaoyang, President of the Film Review Committee, CFA, Dean of the School of Journalism & Communication, Peking University and Chief Editor of the Report on Chinese Film Art released The Report on Chinese Film Art 2019.

  The second half of the forum included two roundtable forums. The first roundtable forum-Director Forum invited Xie Fei, a fourth-generation Chinese film director; Zhang Huijun, a fifth-generation Chinese film director and former President of Chinese Film Academy; director Lv Yue; new-generation director Ning Hao and young director Frant Gwo who have experienced the development of Chinese films and participated in the creation of Chinese films over 70 years. They spoke of their directorial debuts passionately and expressed gratitude for the opportunities arising in the times. Their works span periods, go with the times and show the look of the times. Generations of directors have kept extending the expressiveness of films and renovating film languages, pushed forward Chinese films step by step, and left viewers with memories of youth and the times. Their lively narrations presented the context of Chinese film creation over 70 years, and showcased the vicissitudes of Chinese films over 70 years. From their narrations, filmmakers could discover the power and connotation to achieve in-depth and new development of films in the new era. Zhao Ningyu, Professor at Beijing Film Academy and Director of the Institute of Drama Art at the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy presided over the Director Forum.

  The second roundtable forum was the innovative Critic Forum. Five accomplished film critics: Chen Shan, Jia Leilei, Li Zhenlin, Wu Guanping and Nie Wei commented on key achievements of Chinese films in different periods over 70 years with relish and shared the milestones of Chinese films over 70 years. Prof. Chen Shan from Beijing Film Academy made a comment on the development of Chinese films over 70 years; Jia Leilei, former Vice President of Chinese National Academy of Arts talked about Martial arts films and action films; Prof. Wu Guanping from Beijing Film Academy analyzed the role of film criticism in the film development; Prof. Li Zhenlin, Dean of the School of Film and Television Arts, Shanghai Theatre Academy enthusiastically commented on representative actors with different styles; Prof. Nie Wei from Shanghai University vividly told about images and stories of youth in Chinese films over 70 years. Jiang Xiaohan, a moderator at the Movie Channel of China Central Television, hosted the Critic Forum.

The Chinese Films Forum for the 70th Anniversary year of the People's Republic of China was organized by the China Film Association (CFA), and co-organized by the China National Film Museum, the Film Art Center of CFLAC and the Film Review Committee, CFA.?
