Beijing Film Panorama Achieved Box Office of Over RMB 11 million

The Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) has become an annual feast for Beijing's film fans. A multitude of Chinese and foreign films were screened, but tickets were hard to get. According to a source with China Film Archive (CFA), BJIFF 2017-Beijing Film Panorama achieved overall box office earnings of more than RMB 11 million and an attendance rate of over 65%.
The film curation, invitation, scheduling and promotion of Beijing Film Panorama were still undertaken by CFA and related institutions. Through directional invitation, contracted invitation and independent application, nearly 500 films stood out of more than 2,000 entries from more than 100 countries and regions for 16-day (April 8-23) screening in Beijing's 27 business cinemas and four college cinemas. During the section, the Organizing Committee invited 135 Chinese and foreign guests (film representatives, cast & crew and critics), to attend 38 meet-and-greets and dialogues before and after screening, and communicate with the audience at close range.
According to statistical data released by CFA, as of 2 PM April 22, Beijing Film Panorama had screened 926 sessions, sold 172,781 tickets, fetched RMB 11,014,795 at the overall box office, and achieved an average attendance rate of over 65%. The most popular ticket pack was the eight-in-one pack of Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda which sold out in 46 minutes; and the most popular film is Blow-up directed by Italian film master Michelangelo Antonioni which saw a quick sellout in five minutes.
The second week of Beijing Film Panorama coincided with the release period of The Fate of the Furious in China. Facing the high-grossing Hollywood blockbuster, films in Beijing Film Panorama were competitive. "Facts proved that humanistic films have great appeal to the audience." Sun Xianghui thought that China's film industry is sending a positive signal that only touching stories are the core of film creation no matter how film technologies are upgraded. Film festivals can best cultivate the audience's appreciation. BJIFF has been held for the seventh time, with its audience number and reputation growing year by year. The constant growth of the audience's appreciation of and familiarity with high-quality Chinese and foreign films has inspired the organizers which selected quality films from major international film exhibitions for Chinese audience. The dream of "coming to Beijing to watch the best films in spring" has come true. Beijing's film fans took active part in the film event.
