Media Briefing for Go Away! Mr. Tumor

Among the 15 films nominated for this year’s Tiantan Award, there are two Chinese films, The Master and Go Away! Mr. Tumor. A media briefing for Go Away! Mr. Tumor was held at Beijing International Hotel on April 22 at 11:10 am. Present were Han Yan (director), Liu Ruilin (supporting actor), and Zhao Fang (general manager of Wanda Pictures, producer).

Go Away! Mr. Tumor is directed by Han Yan, starring Bai Baihe and Daniel Wu, which was adapted based on the synonymous cartoon of cartoonist Xiong Dun. It tells the story of 29-year-old cartoonist Xiong Dun, who is afflicted with cancer, but she faces up to his fate. The film was released last summer in Chinese mainland with box office earnings of over 500 million and well received. It won the Golden Angel Award at the 11th Chinese American Film Festival and competed for the 88th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Han said after reading the story, he was greatly impressed, “All of a sudden, I felt an idol like Xiong Dun, who gives us courage, watches dawn when trapped in long shadows and grins in smog days, is needed for this age. I decided to shoot this story. I was sure Go Away! Mr. Tumor is a film I must shoot and share with the audience as soon as possible. I wonder whether a director is lucky enough to have access to such a story. ” According to information, from October 2014 (making preparations for the film) to August 2015 (being shown), Han made the biggest emotional investment, even on the very day starting shooting the film, which coincided with the birth of his son, he briefly left the studio came back the same day.

The story is about “fight against cancer”, but positioned as a “comedy film”. Han explained, the cinematography style is the same as that of the original cartoon, which is not sad and painful, but inspirational and passing on positive energy, so it is a tearfully pleasing film.
