"Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity"
On April 23, 2016, the 6th Beijing International Film Festival held the grand closing ceremony at the Yanqi Lake and Tiantan Award was announced at the event. The biggest winner of Tiantan Award is the Argentina movie La patota (Paulina), which pocketed 3 awards for Best Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Feature Film.
This Tiantan Award was sponsored by Beijing TV and co-sponsored by Beijing Film Academy. After long time of planning and preparation, eventually the Competition Department of Tiantan Award short-listed 15 films from among many of the signed up films and passed to the Jury Committee of Tiantan Award, where they were carefully viewed and collectively discussed and eventually came up with Best Feature Film Award, Best Director Award, Best Actor Award, Best Actress Award, Best Supporting Actor Award, Best Supporting Actress Award, Best Screenplay Award, Best Cinematography Award, Best Music Award and Best Visual Effects Award. The Jury Committee of Tiantan Award is comprised of 7 internationally renowned filmmakers headed by Brett Ratner and joined by Teddy Chan, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Corneliu Porumboiu, Yojiro Takita, Danis Tanovic, and Xu Qing.
At the awarding ceremony, Chairman of the Jury Brett Ratner presented the Best Feature Film to La patota (Paulina). This film tells the story of Paulina who abandons her successful career as a lawyer in Buenos Aires to engage in social activism back in her homeland on the border between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. After two weeks working in a neighbourhood scarred by marginalization, she is assaulted by a gang. Despite the brutality of the attack, instead of fleeing, Paulina resolves to hold tighter to her convictions - to survive, against the odds. Paulina is a social thriller that explores the characters connected to an act of violence- the victims and the perpetrators – and examines how that violence triggers different ideas of justice. The film producer Fernando Broome expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Organizing Committee for granting this special honour to this film when receiving the award.
Best Director Award went to Director Christina Rosendahl for the Denmark film The Idealist presented by the United States renowned director, actor, and Spider-Man Director Sam Raimi and member of the jury Yojiro Takita. The film tells the story of a journalist fighting his way to reveal the truth.
The Best Actor and Best Actress Awards were given to Louis Hofmann of Under sandet (Land of Mine) and Dolores Fonz for her role in La patota (Paulina) respectively.
“Thanks for Beijing International Film Festival and Tiantan Award for holding this grand event," Brett Ratner, the head of the jury said in his speech that it was his great honour to review the Tiantan Award. "My jury members and I were very happy to enjoy the 15 shortlisted films. All of the films are very professional and they represent the world's diversity to us.
