Introduction to the Tiantan Awards

Selection for the Tiantan Awards of the Competition Section of the 5th Beijing International Film Festival involves four steps: film entry, nomination, final selection, and the awards ceremony. The Organizing Committee of the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) solicits the highest caliber of films from both China and throughout the international community, from which the Film Selection Committee nominates entrants for the coveted Tiantan Awards. Following final selection according to award procedure for evaluation of Tiantan Awards in each category by the International Competition Jury, official results will be announced at the awards ceremony on the evening of April 23.

Throughout the selection process, the Organizing Committee fully carries out the core idealistic and aesthetic values of “Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity” on which the award is founded. With the highest standards, the festival gathers the cream of the international film community. Its global vision, humanistic sentiment, and impartial selection process allow the festival to select works of great international significance. We have striven to establish the Tiantan Awards as the spirit of the Beijing International Film Festival, and as the core catalyst for further increasing the festival’s prestige.

“Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity” are the core values of the Tiantan Awards. “Beauty in Variety” represents respect for cultural diversity, including both developing one’s own culture and respecting those of the others, and aims to promote mutual cultural reflection and the common development and prosperity of human civilization. “Harmony in Diversity” reflects the common global ideals of harmonious development and cooperative mutual benefits. These values work together to carry out the festival’s guiding principles of “Share the Screen, Shape the Future” and realize the orientation and objective of the Tiantan Awards, putting Beijing, Chinese, and global film communities in dialogues with each other, allowing them to support each other’s success and promote the ideal of harmonious development of film worldwide.
