Introduction to "Classical Peking Opera Film" Section

    Culture is the soul for a nation. Peking Opera is the most influential and typical opera among Chinese national cultural operas with the widest audience coverage. It is known as an encyclopedia representing Chinese society and history and encompassing 5000-year traditional Chinese culture.

　　The 5^th BJIFF specially sets up a section for classical Peking Opera films, in response to the 110^th anniversary of the first Chinese film - Peking Opera Mount Ding Jun. It will serve as a platform and carrier to further promote Chinese traditional culture, narrate Chinese story and promote socialist core values, as well as promoting Chinese opera to the world stage.

　　　The 5th BJIFF selects top 5 films from Peking Opera Film Project, which are Auspicious Dragon and Phoenix, Farewell My Concubine, the No. 1 Scholar’s Matchmaking, Qin Xianglian, and Xiao He Chases Han Xin in the Moonlight. Advocated by the central state leaders, this Project is greatly supported by the Ministry of Culture of the PRC, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the PRC, and the Publicity Department of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and jointly implemented by China National Peking Opera Company, Beijing Peking Opera Theater, Tianjin Peking Opera Theater, Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe, Shanghai Peking Opera Theater, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, China Film Group Corporation, Shanghai Film Group Corporation, Tianjin North Film Group, Capital Jinghu Art Research Association and Shanghai Institute of Visual Art. This Project gathers well-known Peking Opera performers and leading Peking Opera troupes. This Project will select the classical Peking Operas with the highest artistic value among numerous Peking Operas and widely promote the excellent operas performed by contemporary top Peking Opera artists and musicians through stage performance and filmmaking so as to better carry forward this art. This is the most influential and significant milestone project in Peking Opera history.
