Wu Jing to Meet you at BJIFF on August 22

The 10th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) will open on August 22

Renowned filmmaker Wu Jing will be the ambassador for the 10th BJIFF

He is a very special one among Chinese filmmakers, with a lot of labels: workaholic, tough guy, kung fu superstar

His legend started from his early role as a "kung fu kid".

Wu was born in a martial arts family in Beijing. Before he started his career as an actor, martial arts seemed to be everything in his life.

Wu was gifted and won the first place in several national Wushu (martial arts) competitions. Were it not for the "film", he would have taken martial arts as his lifelong profession. In 1995, recommended by a director, he made his film debut in Tai Chi Boxer at the age of 21.

Since then Wu has appeared in numerous films and TV series like Master of Tai Chi and Legend of Dagger Li, and been labeled as a "martial arts star".

Practicing martial arts from childhood has tempered his endurance and persistence. If he wanted to achieve something, he would keep going. For greater success in films, he decided to give up his gorgeous identity as a "martial art star" and headed to Hong Kong to start over again in 2003.

Wu shot to stardom for his role as a ruthless assassin in SPL: Sha Po Lang in 2005, and was nominated for the 44th Golden Horse Awards for his role in Invisible Target (2007). After being recognized, he did not want to stop, but expect more. The "stubbornness" of martial artists kept him moving on to produce Wolf Warrior.

Wu wrote and directed the action war film, and starred in it. In seven years of preparations, he put almost all his money and heart into it. Before the shooting, he spent 18 months in a special force to experience the life there. The film was shot in a deserted area with tough conditions. Despite all hardships, he finished the film with great perseverance and showed his efforts are worthy.

Upon release, Wolf Warrior drew great attention and gained heaps of praise. It was nominated for the Best Director at the 33rd People's Hundred Flowers Awards, the Best Directorial Debut at the 22nd Beijing College Student Film Festival and the Best New Director at the 20th Huading Awards.

Then he continued his move to shoot Wolf Warrior 2 in Africa. As a sequel to Wolf Warrior, it presented more breathtaking views. It was a hit and became the highest grossing film in China with 5.68 billion yuan at the box office.

In 2019, Wu starred in science fiction film The Wandering Earth. Director Frant Gwo, as "stubborn" as Wu, tried his best. Wu appreciated and supported him. To produce this practical science fiction film, Wu joined as a special guest star and supported the "wandering plan" of the "small broken ball" (the nickname of the film) as a co-presenter. Based on a novella of the same name by Liu Cixin, the film is the first real science fiction film in China. Because of it, this year was referred to as the "first year for Chinese science fiction films". It ended up achieving success in both reputation and box office, and became an epoch-making film in China.

From a martial artist to a filmmaker, Wu has gone step by step just like a swordsman transcending himself all along to become an unstoppable master. The Wolf Warrior franchise, The Wandering Earth and The Climbers… Wu's name has been closely tied to Chinese films.

This year, the Organizing Committee of the BJIFF has the great honor to invite Wu Jing as the ambassador for the 10th BJIFF to continue his destiny with this international film gathering.

As an old friend of the BJIFF, Wu has been invited many times as an important guest.

Early in 2017, Wu and its production team promoted Wolf Warrior 2 at the 7th BJIFF. At the Closing Ceremony, he presented the Tiantan Award for Best Supporting Actress. He said the venue for the Awards Ceremony is exactly a shooting place of Wolf Warrior.

When Wu took to the red carpet for the Opening Ceremony of the BJIFF in 2018 again, he said, "I was uneasy when I promoted Wolf Warrior 2 at the BJIFF last year, but the film ended up being a success, I think the BJIFF is a blessed land, I am happy to witness the miracles of Chinese films here." The BJIFF has witnessed the growth and success of this Chinese filmmaker. Wu will return to the blessed land as the ambassador in August 2020 to share the "best films" with fans, and work with the BJIFF to keep pushing China's film industry forward just as he said, "There are still a lot of dreams yet to be fulfilled, we will work harder to present better films."
