Joan Chen, Chinese-speaking actress, director and screenwriter. Born in 1961 in Shanghai, Joan Chen started her film career at the age of 14, and stood out soon. She won the 3rd People’s Hundred Flowers Award for Best Actress for the film Xiao Hua in 1980, and rose to stardom overnight. Throughout her decades of acting career, she performed more than 80 films and TV dramas, and worked with many prestigious domestic and international directors, such as Bernardo Bertolucci, David Lynch, Jiang Wen, and Zhang Yimou. She made her directorial debut in 1997, and won her first Best Director award. Her directorial films have received high recognition and awards in the international community. Chen served as jury member at major international film festivals, such as the Berlin International Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival and so on. And she’s a lifetime member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
