Outdoor Screenings Section Makes Its Debut Appearance with Light of Film Illuminating Summer Nights

Since the 1970s, outdoor films have gained increased population in China. Upon the announcement of screening information, a flood of filmgoers would gather in the open spaces for screenings. Some loyal fans, no matter how far they were from, would show up anyway. But nowadays, outdoor screening is not only a simple form of watching films, but also epitomizes memories of generations and serves as a vessel to contain their complex.

As night falls, the filmgoers come to the outdoor screening venue of Inside-out Cinema. Queuing, showing health kits, taking temperature, admission guided by specially designated persons, sitting on the steps at a certain distance – all this means the bustling Outdoor Screenings is well underway.

Especially notable on the list of the films to be screened is the music documentary We Are X. The film was shortlisted for the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Documentary in the World Cinema Documentary section at the 32nd Sundance Film Festival, USA, and the Golden Goblet Award for Best Documentary Film at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival, China. The engrossing 92-minute documentary expatiates on the legendary story of X-Japan, a famous Japanese heavy metal band to perform Visual Kei with a dominating position in its generation, with a focus on exploring the inward world of the team soul and its capital, YOSHIKI.

At the screening site, many X-Japan fans came to the Outdoor Screenings especially with the band’s commemorative T-shirt on, full of a sense of ceremony. Some fans said that it is an unprecedented touch to watch a film about YOSHIKI screened outdoors at the BJIFF and meet and discuss with like-minded people. Since the venue was in the open air, passers-by were attracted by the intensity of music now and then and stopped to watch the film. The atmosphere of watching the film during the Outdoor Screenings is as high as ever.

Outdoor Screenings of this year's BJIFF will offer fans an opportunity to recall memories.  Alongside We Are X, The Weight of Water, Angry Bike, Blade of the Law and many other Chinese and foreign masterpieces can also satisfy film fans’ various film-watching preferences.
