President of Beijing Film Academy Zhang Huijun Significant Contribution of the Film Festival to Chinese Films and Chinese Culture
Zhang Huijun, President of Beijing Film Academy, has been the Vice President of Beijing International Film Festival for six consecutive years. He is also the first sponsor and applicant of the film festival. "A child will grow with times." Over the past five years, Beijing International Film Festival has been growing rapidly and now is in full flowering. Zhang Huijun was delighted and proud at the interview, "The film festival is actually a country's cultural name card, also a barometer of the market. It plays a substantial role in leading the Chinese film market. Beijing International Film Festival enables us to see more good foreign films and helps the Chinese filmmakers and young artists see the development trend of films in the world. It also offers us a chance to understand how to promote Chinese traditional culture and express cultural deposits through works, bringing impact on the whole world by means of soft power. This is the objective and significance of the Beijing International Film Festival."
In the interview, Zhang Huijun disclosed a little-known "inside story": it was he who made the report in person to facilitate the birth of the Festival. "I wrote a letter to the central leadership and reached all the related leadership to apply for Beijing International Film Festival, and finally it was approved. It was not called as Beijing International Film Festival in the beginning, but Chinese Beijing International Film Season in Chinese. But we insisted on using the International Film Festival in English. And it was directly renamed as Beijing International Film Festival in the second session." Zhang Huijun still remains fresh in his memory about the details of the report. "I said, Beijing, as a political, cultural and economic centre, if with no film festival, how Chinese culture shall be spread out, how to exchange with the outside world..." Looking back today, the Beijing International Film Festival and the blowout development of Chinese market during the past five years complemented and enhanced each other. When summarizing this thriving scene, Zhang Huijun said, "On the one hand, the world began to pay attention to the increasing improvement of Chinese film market, and the filmmakers all began to gather in Beijing to cooperate movie projects with China, and to jointly develop the film market; on the other hand, Chinese film industry and film market have also developed very rapidly. Young directors are growing in fast speed and the box office has been increasing constantly. Beijing International Film Festival's contribution to all these are undeniable. Its influence, its operation, and its cultural radiance have played significant role in Chinese movies and Chinese culture."
When it comes to the position and influence of Beijing International Film Festival in the industry, Zhang Huijun believes that Beijing International Film Festival started late, but it is young; it is not scaled, but is very influential; the award-winning works are not too extensive, but it has had the "symbolic influence of exemplary significance", and it has drawn many young filmmakers and film organizations to take part in the selection and exhibition of their films. "I don't think we should worry. We must not push too hard. Culture is not something can be done in a minute. And building influence takes time. The coverage and final emission of energy often takes place in the later stages. Most importantly, Beijing is full of prospects!"
According to Zhang Huijun, there is another important contribution of Beijing International Film Festival that should not be overlooked, that is, the positive cultivation for the audience. "More young people go to the cinema now, particularly during the Festival season. Through the Beijing Film Panorama and the screening of the finalists of Tiantan Award, more young people can learn about Western movies, and have direct contact with the pictures without the need of downloading, even with the directors, actors, producers through the Festival, thus understand more about the charm of film culture."
Speaking about the prominent features of the 6th Beijing International Film Festival and his expectations, Zhang Huijun says, it reflects a multicultural influence, and then the further development of internationalization, particularly the continuous strengthening of the cooperation of China with foreign film agencies and filmmakers through the film festival. Above all, it is to launch some of Chinese films with influence and cultural heritage, and this is of the top priority for the 6th Film Festival. He earnestly looks forward to seeing domestic films winning awards in the International Film Festival; some young directors are highlighted so they can adapt to the current film development in China and in the world. And he hopes that foreign film agencies and filmmakers can know more about the status quo development of Chinese film industry through this festival, and strengthen the overall construction of Chinese film industry through such exchanges.
