“Magic Editing” Forum Focuses on New Audio-visual Expression of Short and Long films; Annual Editors’ List of Movies in Focus Program, “The Tao of Gold Editing”, to be Released soon!
Editing and film art have gone hand in hand for more than a hundred years, from the film era to the digital era through the era of network-enabled audiovisual media. The technique of editing video footage to create narratives has elevated film to an art form. Language of the image is applied in various forms of video works, from feature films, TV dramas, and various short films to short videos that are now popular on the ground. The connotation and denotation of editing are constantly expanding.
“The Tao of Gold Editing” is intended to make public the practical experience and editing theories gained by film editors for years. Gold in general represents dream, growth, and harvest. “The Tao of Gold Editing” is the essence of the art of film editing! This naming is to reflect the standard and value of the art of film editing. “The Tao of Gold Editing” presents the perfect form of creation methods, editing techniques, aesthetic styles, and theories of art that academic and industry experts have on the art of film, as well as its development trend.
2During the 5th BJIFF in April 2015, the China Cinema Editors Association (CCEA) hosted Magic Editing as the core thematic forum of the Summit on the Beauty of Film, one of the three major forums at that event.
On September 25, 2021, the CCEA held the Forum on Short Video Creation and Short Film Art in the Age of Media Convergence at the 11th BJIFF, along with the announcement of the official establishment of the Short Film and Short Video Art Committee.
The CCEA will host the “Magic Editing” forum during the 12th BJIFF with the theme of “A Brighter Future: New Image, New Horizon, New Tao of Editing”. The forum will bring together famous editors from home and abroad to focus on film and television works from their professional perspectives; to explain their understanding of the rules of creation and aesthetic character of the art of film editing with their extensive creative experience; to highlight the innovation and development trend of the art of film editing in the era of network entertainment; to explore cutting-edge views of contemporary film editing; and to enhance the level of audiovisual art in the new image era with film and television editing skills, so as to build a more brilliant future of cinema and television arts in China.
The new image era is launching cinema and television arts into a new horizon, where audiovisual language has become a second language for people to observe the world and understand life. The era of creation by all people has provided a larger and more flexible space for online videos, especially short videos, and at the same time, short films, micro-short dramas and short videos have become a proving ground for continuous exploration of new audiovisuals and new language. This forum will gather leading filmmakers, experts, scholars, and creators in China or abroad to share views on creation methods, editing techniques, aesthetic styles, artistic concepts and development trends of short films and micro-short dramas. Grounding themselves on openness, inclusiveness and professionalism, the attendees will explore the new horizon of the industry, with a focus on the new Tao of video clips. They work to make the fragmented content carry humanist values and technical specifications; to develop new creation concepts for short films, micro-short dramas, and short videos on the rise; to enable the guidance of short videos shifting to the professional audiovisual language field; to realize the diversified development of the art of film editing in the era of multi-screen network entertainment; and to enhance the audiovisual literacy of all people.
“Attention” gives people power, and “focus” shows an attitude. People watch movies, TV series, online movies, online dramas, short films, and short videos and get nourished by audiovisual art with their eyes, whereas creators observe and record the world with their “third eye”. In this case, all of the lights and bright spots will eventually be seen and become the focus, giving professional support for cinema and television and network audio-visual arts to move forward.
The forum will launch “The Tao of Gold Editing”, an annual Editors’ List of Movies in Focus program, which reflects the value of the art of film editing and examines movies, TV series, and online film and television works from the perspective of film editors. From their point of view and with a professional, multi-dimensional selection approach, a professional Movies in Focus team consisting of senior film editors, professional filmmakers, and film scholars and experts will sort out the annual editors’ list of movies in focus and release the annual list of short films, micro-short dramas and short videos in focus to form an annual viewing guide, providing a good example of improving all people’s audiovisual standard of new images.
Different from the traditional way of calling for entries in the past, the annual Editors’ List of Movies in Focus program, The Tao of Gold Editing, will switch from the passive reception of film submissions to the active focus of professionals and the industry.
