The BJIFF Beijing Film Market Project Pitches follows an open and fair selection mechanism. Due to the phenomenal legions of entries this year, the eight jury members met several times, discussing the submitted projects. With their own viewpoints and vision, each member argued for their favorite projects and also insisted on putting forward negative opinions on certain projects. So, heated debates were frequently seen at the jury meetings. For the judges, however, the alignment point was their cautious attitude toward their right to vote and to value good projects. Each of the shortlisted projects was fully discussed. In the end, the jury evaluated multiple dimensions, such as the completeness of the play, thematic purpose, genre narrative, audience acceptance, and production difficulty, encouraging original works that are innovative and feasible, and striving to single out excellent film projects with artistic level and market potential.
The 30 pitching projects shortlisted for the second-round selection are rich and diverse in genres, with the dominance of feature and suspense projects. Included in the second-round selection are also other genres such as family, comedy, science fiction, fantasy, animation, and romance, among which there are a few masterpieces that have won the unanimous favor of multiple judges. What’s more, this year the many projects with female and minority themes were discussed at the first-round selection meetings, and their creative perspectives of looking at reality and keeping their finger on the pulse of the times gained attention from the judges.
The 10 WIP projects shortlisted for the second-round selection included feature, family, comedy, musical, documentary, animation, and other genres, each presenting their own expression and production techniques from various dimensions such as image, script and the film crew, and winning in the fierce competition.
With senior industry experience, the jury members of the BJIFF 2022 Project Pitches hailed from major domestic film production companies and studios, and they provided multiple professional perspectives for this year’s first-round selection. The jury of the first-round selection is as below:
The eight judges reviewed the projects one by one and graded each one after deliberate consideration, not letting go of any good project. In the multiple rounds of selection meetings, the judges even had meticulous and intense discussions. They had demanding considerations from the play to the realistic level:
“Navigating such a realistic project requires a lot of ability from the creator”
“The script is very subtle, but it is significantly literal. There may be instability for this kind of script during it is translated to a film"
“This will require high production costs, but if great outcomes are delivered, it is very promising"
Also, there are also unstinting praises for outstanding projects:
“It's rare to see such a mind-boggling comedy project in China”
“The theme is more profound and philosophical”
“Innovation is properly presented in the narrative framework of the genre”
“I think that it develops a global outlook and can be recognized overseas”
The jury members, with their passionate dedication and professional perspectives, selected film projects with truly outstanding standards and huge potential, and expect them to go to a broader world and further promote the new ecology of Chinese cinema.
The 30 shortlisted pitching projects and 10 WIP projects will make their way to the second-round selection and interview process to receive a new round of assessment and selection. Among them, 10 pitching projects and 6 WIP projects will receive training from senior professional instructors, and finally stand on the stage of the BJIFF 2022 Project Pitches to compete for the Projects with Greatest Commercial Potential, Best Original Script Award, Best Creativity Award, and Special Award in the pitching project category, and the Most Investment Value Project Award and Team with Greatest Potential Award in the WIP project category, respectively.
