The Women’s Voice section is dedicated to, in a continuous way, paying attention to and finding how films depict the women’s body, inner world, living circumstances and historical memory, so as to encourage and find out more insiders and films themed on women.
We use the eyesight and voice of women as the method to get into and reflect on the films. The films about women can be found in all sections of the BJIFF, proving that attention to women has been freed out of the niche into the type, time and space.
The Women’s Voice section recommends the following seven films.

Hard Love
Why would women live a single life? The Director Dong Xueying, starting with her own experience, filmed the five contemporary Chinese ladies who have different personalities and circumstances. The five ladies are single and give wonderful replies to the question. The film unveils the truth of “single ladies”, who have long hidden themselves in the society observations and worldly discussions. Through the large number of authentic but delicate elements of life, it builds an emotional space of thinking, uses the camera to record and raises soul-reaching questions to the audiences. The film was shortlisted for the 10th China Academy Awards of Documentary Film, was included in the 2018IDF Selected Programs and won the Special Prize in ONEIWFF 2020 ONE Project.

Is my son the murderer? The quick-moving Director Takahisa Zeze, after the films Showa Year 64 and My Friend “A”, continues to observe the Japanese society via the crime cases. Proficient in depicting the underworld life in metropolis, he places the emphasis of the story on women, which is rarely seen in other films. Kanno Miho, Takahata Mitsuki and Machiko Ono play three young mothers, whose sons happen to use the same name, thus having their fate closely linked. The sudden death of a child disrupts the peaceful life, sinking the three families into the whirl of crisis. The cracks, understanding and solid trust between the mothers and sons, the contradictions and doubt of the mothers, and the good vs evil fight in human nature are shown completely, making the film a most educating lesson.

Young cartoonist Rakel happens to get pregnant, who has a whole lot of other plans than becoming a mother. She would rather party or get drunk. This Ninjababy, who gets into her body and her life without prior notice, and the inner world of the characters in the film, are presented in the form of handmade animations and real-life actors. In this way, the film has exceptional force of visual expression. The girl Rakel, while attempting to escape from her responsibility, in the midst of fantastic imaginations and gags, silently changes her perspective of life. The first fiction feature of Norwegian female director Yngvild Sve Flikke, because of its wonderful performance, and won the title of Best Films in the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, Young Filmmakers Section, which deserves your attention.

To find the truth, Yuko tries every means to obtain the documentary freedom and trust from interviewees. However, when approaching the truth, Yuko finds she has to reach a balance between truth and lies, and even faces the dilemma that can determine her life. The film makes microscopic observation and analysis of the social features and morality of women, thus winning the New Currents Award in the Busan International Film Festival, Most Popular Film in the Crouching Tiger Section in the Pingyao International Film Festival and Jury Award of Roberto Rossellini Awards.
