Based on the core value of "Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity” and the beautiful meaning of traditional Chinese culture, the Tiantan Award commends the excellent films and filmmakers from all over the world. With the theme “New Opportunity · New Horizon”, the BJIFF continues to make innovations with endless efforts. The film festival has concluded successfully, but the films will never stop forging ahead. Let’s make concerted efforts to create light and get together next year!

On the evening of the Closing & Awards Ceremony, the theme films and young filmmakers also paid tribute to the great historical process.
Closing & Awards Ceremony of the 11th Beijing International Film Festival

The Closing & Awards Ceremony this year should be regarded as "a wonderful night to be remembered forever" in the history of the BJIFF. It broke the pattern of traditional award ceremony and boldly adopted the real-time multi-point connection technology to enable foreign cast & crew of twelve films shortlisted for "Tiantan Award”   to participate in the Closing & Awards Ceremony simultaneously through internet. Although the award-winning cast & crew overseas were unable to be present on the site due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the joy and touch always stayed together—all the awards were revealed in the form of "online" and conveyed to every crew worldwide in real time. The fate of all filmmakers in the world was closely connected on the platform of Beijing International Film Festival. The international film festival has concluded successfully now but the curtain of film will never be dropped. Let’s gather together again at the Beijing International Film Festival in 2022 and “watch the world's best films in Beijing"!

Winners of “Tiantan Award” Revealed
“Tiantan Award” for the Best Feature Film at the 11th BJIFF

On September 29, the result of Tiantan Award was finally released at the closing ceremony of the 11th Beijing International Film Festival and five Chinese and foreign films shared nine major honors. Danish film The Pact won the Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress; Finnish film Any Day Now won the Best Supporting Actor and Best Music; Russian film A Siege Diary won the Best Director and French film Slalom won the Best Actress. Most surprisingly, the film Beyond the Skies won three awards: the Best Feature Film, Best Actor (all actors), and Best Cinematography. It’s another Chinese film winning the Tiantan Award for the Best Feature Film since the film 1942.

Non-professional actors, full real-time shooting, decolorization treatment, enemy blurring and countless illusions, Beyond the Skies  has innovated many conventional expression techniques commonly adopted by Chinese war films within the limited length. In a relatively mature market, such a type of film seems very fresh and unfamiliar, while the film festival is just the best platform to help such films break the strangeness and establish the familiarity. The Tiantan Award for Best Feature Film is not only an encouragement to Beyond the Skies, but also a solemn invitation to more Chinese filmmakers devoted to making unique and diverse voices.

Screening Activity Concluded Successfully
Screening activity concluded successfully at  Poly International Cinema, Tian'anmen, Beijing

The shortlisted films for the 11th BJIFF "Tiantan Award" were screened successively at Poly International Cinema, Tian'anmen, Beijing starting from September 1 and all the 15 shortlisted films have been screened successfully up to now. As the official competition section of the BJIFF, the "Tiantan Award" aims to discover and gather the latest excellent films in the world and encourage the diversity in the film industry. The “Tiantan Award” Beijing Film Panorama included a total of 15 shortlisted films and 9 films included the post-screening exchange with the cast & crew.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the cast & crew of 7 foreign films such as The Pact, Last Film Show, A School in Cerro Hueso, were unable to be present on the site in person. However, with the passion for films and audience, director Bille August and director Pan Nalin interacted with the audience in real time through big screen in the cinema despite many difficulties such as jet lag and inability to be present on site in person. Although the people of different ages came from different regions, they still conveyed similar emotions in the video, making the audience burst into tears and laughter as well as enthusiastic applauses on the site. The online interaction between international cast & crew and onsite audiences was not a pity. On the contrary, it proved the great development of Chinese film industry and cinema technology in past years. Despite the long distance, the world-class filmmakers could still convey the spirit of film and tell the world through the voice in Beijing, “Filmmakers always stay together".

Make Concerted Efforts to Create Light
Volunteers at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival

From early spring to late summer, time can't beat persistence after all. Although the Beijing International Film Festival was delayed, all the volunteers of the 11th BJIFF travelled afar just for the appointment with the lights and shadows. In real life, they were only the common people; here, they took off their "ordinary" clothes and put on the volunteer “jacket". They rushed between the venues without a pause and achieved the self breakthroughs despite the difficulties. Their busy figures became the beautiful scenery in various activities at the BJIFF. All the "BJIFF People" have written an "autumn story" in this September. The BJIFF this year has concluded successfully, let’s get together next year.
