RMB 50 Billion!
According to preliminary statistics of the National Commission for the Management of Special Funds for the Development of Film Industry, the annual gross box office of China exceeded RMB 50 billion as of November 13, 2023. Specifically, domestic films accounted for 83.4%, the highest percentage over the last decade, and imported films 16.6%.
As of the date when this news was published, top 10 earners are all produced in China.
In particular, there are 4 realistic films, 2 animations, 1 sci-fi, 1 historical drama, 1 ancient myth and 1 comedy. Those films are diversified in terms of subject matters and budget, and have enriched the composition of the Chinese film market.
The highest-grossing films, i.e. Full River Red and The Wandering Earth II, and No.8 earner, Boonie Bears: Guardian Code, were released in theaters during the Spring Festival. In recent years, the Spring Festival period has gradually surpassed other periods, and become the most active one in the Chinese film market. And going to the cinema becomes the prime choice for family entertainment upon reunion.

No.4 earner—Lost in the Stars was released during the Dragon Boat Festival. It did a great job in vitalizing the market in the led-up to the summer holiday. No.10 earner, Godspeed, opened in cinemas during the Labor Day holiday. The period still holds effective market edge, and it works better for the release of low- and mid-budget films.
No.9 earner, Under the Light, was released during the National Day Holiday. Director Zhang Yimou has two films in the top 10 chart this year, and he remains fully committed to filmmaking.
