BJIFF·Film+|When Gong Li Meets the Central Axis: A Line, Two People, and a Dialogue with Civilization
Serving as Jury President of the Tiantan Award Competition Section at the 11th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) in 2021, Gong Li said at the Opening Ceremony: "We love China, we love Beijing, and we love Beijing International Film Festival. We hope that through Beijing International Film Festival, people around the world can better understand Chinese culture, art, and the stories of the Chinese people." Over the years, Gong Li has remained deeply connected to the cultural heritage of Beijing. Her presence is not only felt on the dazzling stages of film and art, but also quietly interwoven into the historical chronicles of Beijing.

Gong Li and her husband Jean-Michel Jarre
Recently, Gong Li and her husband – French electronic music master Jean-Michel Jarre - embarked on a private walk along Beijing's Central Axis. From Yongding Gate to Jingshan, this central axis, representing the backbone of the ancient capital and its civilizational order, revealed possibilities for a dialogue across time and space through their footsteps. As the first Western musician invited to perform in China after the country's reform and opening-up, Jarre once held a concert at the Forbidden City. This walk also resonated as an echo of culture and memory.

The Beijing Central Axis is not only the backbone of the ancient capital, but also a vivid carrier of Chinese civilization. During their visit to Beijing Central Axis, Gong Li and her husband immersed themselves in the textured history of Altar of the God of Agriculture by day, and lingered amid the resplendent night lights of the Temple of Heaven and Qianmen. With culture as a medium, Gong Li shared with her husband Jarre the Chinese stories embedded within the red walls and golden tiles. May the civilizations of both countries continue to learn from each other, and may Sino-French friendship take deep root and flourish in the fertile soil of culture - where beauty and harmony are shared.

During this walk, Gong Li, with her poised and unhurried steps, accomplished a silent yet profound cultural transmission. Without deliberate explanation, she allowed the world to glimpse a living axis - one that carries history while remaining open to the future. This embodies the most vivid posture of an international film artist delving into the fabric of civilization and promoting Chinese culture: understanding through walking, presenting through details, and allowing Eastern solemnity and artistic spirituality to flow naturally into the vision of the world.

A line connects time and space; two individuals encounter civilization. Such a journey is precisely the most serene and profound expression of cultural confidence.
