“Everlasting BJIFF” Media Catalogue Recommendation: Shadowless Tower, Reserved and Silent
Today, the “Everlasting BJIFF” presents the fourth film media catalogue—The Shadowless Tower by director Zhang Lu. The film is opening in theaters on October 27.

Following suit of the three media catalogues, the fourth edition is made up of film critics in various fields so as to ensure high-quality and in-depth critics, and provide film fans with an objective and precise profiling.
The Shadowless Tower focuses on the affair between the middle-aged man Gu Wentong (played by Xin Baiqing) and young photographer Ouyang Wenhui (played by Huang Yao), and reveals their complicated conflicts with their fathers, lovers and selves. Their inner world is exposed and lit up in daily Beijing.

The film won awards at many domestic and international film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival. In particular, it received five awards at the 13th BJIFF Closing & Awards Ceremony, namely the Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actor and Best Artistic Contribution.

Director Zhang Lu had an impactful screening of his film Fukuoka in the Focus section of the 9th BJIFF in 2019. Xin Baiqing and Wen Muye, director and screenwriter, presented the Best Screenplay of the 12th BJIFF Tiantan Award in 2022. In the same year, In Search of Lost Time featuring Huang Yao served as the stunning opening film of the 12th BJIFF.
Director Tian Zhuangzhuang has a close tie with the BJIFF. He joined the cast & crew of the Love Education at the Red Carpet for the Opening Ceremony of the 7th BJIFF in 2017. The 4K restoration of his classic film The Horse Thief had its premiere at the 8th BJIFF, and was screened in the 40th Anniversary of the Reform and Opening up section in 2018.

The film has received continuous acclaims since it won awards at the 13th BJIFF. It was hard to grab a ticket for the film screenings in Shanghai, Hong Kong, China, and New York among other places, and the film sparked heated and lively discussion among fans. The Shadowless Tower is not only about love and city, but also about individual inner world.

Gu Wentong and Ouyang Wenhui, despite their age difference, provokes our thoughts on relationship and realistic constraints. Surrounding them are classmates, fathers, daughters, sons, couples and family among other identities that shape their life and define them. The film depicts the in-depth effects of those identities on two main characters’ life. And the audience is able to see themselves in this film.

Director Zhang Lu said at the 13th BJIFF Closing Ceremony, “Our film is about to be released in cinemas in the second half of this year, facing the cruel market. Hopefully, regardless of the results, we will greet each other with smile in future.” Such an outstanding Chinese arthouse film that has won multiple awards at major film festivals, like the BJIFF and Berlin International Film Festival, enables the audience and fans to appreciate the creators’ love for the city of Beijing and their pursuit of artistic creation.
