Official Selection of Tiantan Award - The Keeper - The Forefather of All Great German Goalkeepers

The Keeper, a short-listed candidate for the Tiantan Award at this year's Beijing International Film Festival, tells the story of forgiveness - Bert Trautmann is a German Nazi soldier in World War II and a prison of war brought back to Britain. Under chance encounter, a football manager discovers his talent and sends him to play for Manchester City. Trautmann uses his tireless hard work and unwavering conviction to win over his love and the respect of everyone.

Inspired by the true story of legendary Bert Trautmann, one of the greatest goalkeepers in the eyes of British football fans and a perennial brave on the pitch enshrined in the hearts of the Germans, the film reiterates Trautmann's glories on the silver screen.

The lead actor for The Keeper is someone that many viewers are quite familiar with. Playing the role of Bert Trautmann is David Kross, who starred in The Reader, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 81st the Academy Award. In the film, Kate Winslet and Kross become intertwined in a "forbidden love" relationship, and for his work Kross was nominated for Best Actor at the 22nd European Film Award. In addition, he has also played prominent roles in Into the White and War Horse.

Freya Marvor, who plays Margaret, is notable for her appearances in the movie Cézanne and I, British television miniseries The White Queen and Skins, among many other film and TV productions. Support actor Harry Melling is best known for his role as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films.

Director Marcus H. Rosenmüller has directed numerous films such as Wer früher stirbt ist l?nger tot (2006) and Die Perlmutterfarbe (2009). An expert at employing the minor details in life to drive changes in emotions and development of the plot, The Keeperwill surely showcase his sophistication in this area.

At the start of the film, Margaret's feelings for Bert is very complicated, with resistance mingled with curiosity, and thereafter she falls deeply in love with Bert. The transformations and diversity in emotion during this period are finely demonstrated by the director.

Furthermore, the film's visual style also has its own charisma. When depicting Bert's many year's of footballing experience, the film uses cross-cutting of coarse black and white clips and intricate color segments, and Bert's life after marriage is displayed in a semi-documentary manner so as to circumvent temporal and spatial limitations.

When describing memories that have always haunted Bert, the tone turns gloomy and grayish to convey a more solemn and depressing ambiance. This portion of memory appears time and again throughout the film in fragments, and ultimately is shown in its entirety, while the visual style supplements the nightmarish quality of the memory content as it gradually rear its ugly head. The life of this venerated football star is showcased in all its glory under such a charming cinema aesthetic.
