In the following decade, Zhang emerged as a renowned figure in the realm of screenwriting, becoming synonymous with excellence. From Dearest to The Island and Leap, Zhang Ji's name became a seal of quality, assuring audiences of exceptional storytelling. Leap brought him a flurry of awards, including Best Screenplay at the 33rd Golden Rooster Awards and Excellent Screenplay at the 19th Huabiao Film Awards. Zhang Ji has diversified his role in the film industry in recent years. He served as a script supervisor and consultant on the films Coffee or Tea? and Cloudy Mountain respectively, contributing more unique ideas and depth to these works. In 2022, he made his directorial debut with Tale of the Night, a film set against the backdrop of Changsha full of vibrancy that tells the stories of ordinary people dealing with the ups and downs of life.

Zhang Ji's works predominantly revolve around the people and stories of China, imbued with profound humanistic sensibility and a deep sense of zeitgeist. Perhaps, this can be attributed to his personal experiences that have shaped his artistic perspective. Zhang Ji, born in Hunan Province, developed a passion for cinema while residing in Beijing, which ultimately led him to embark on a path of creative expression. The old hutongs and poplar trees of Beijing have always held a special place in Zhang Ji's heart, serving as a wellspring of inspiration that finds its way into his artistic creations.
Zhang Ji's years of experience living as a "Beijing drifter" have exposed him to the realities of poverty and periods of uncertainty, but they have also granted him a wealth of life experiences and insights. It is precisely because Zhang has truly experienced life's ups and downs that he is able to create compelling stories that strike a chord with audiences and resonate on a deep emotional level. "For a work to flourish, it must have strong roots that delve deep into the ground, allowing its branches to grow ever higher." This valuable insight not only encapsulates Zhang's approach to creativity but also embodies his aspirations for young creators.
Zhang Ji, a familiar face at the BJIFF, has had his works showcased on multiple occasions at the film festival. He enthusiastically participates in various BJIFF activities, exchanging creative insights and experiences with filmmakers from across the globe. As a jury member at the Project Pitches section of last year's BJIFF, Zhang provided invaluable advice and guidance to young filmmakers, drawing from his expertise and distinctive viewpoints. As Zhang officially assumes the role of Vice President of the China Film Association this year, he will take on additional responsibilities. Alongside his dedication to the thriving development of the film industry, he aims to guide young filmmakers towards a path of progress.
When inspiration converges and passion collides, the interplay of light and shadow crystallizes into enduring visual verses. Let us accompany Zhang Ji on an enchanting voyage, where we can revel in the bewitching allure and invigorating vivacity of the creative process.
