During the reign of the Zhengde Emperor of the Ming dynasty, cavalry from the Western Regions pressed against the frontier. At midnight, border guard Liu Yibing intercepts a bandit known as Ma Laizi and discovers foreign gold ingots in his possession. Under severe interrogation, Ma confesses that he had been hired by merchants from the Western Regions to trade gold for bricks, bricks that turn out to be the fortress’s vital structural core, the "Dingcheng Bricks". The inspecting officer orders the soldier who had concealed the gold executed on the spot and commands Liu Yibing to recover the missing bricks within three hours.
Set against the backdrop of Ming-dynasty frontier defense, the film follows an ordinary man who, driven by an instinctive sense of loyalty to his homeland, finds himself thrust onto the path of defending his country. Through this small story, the film reflects the absurdity and helplessness of officialdom in the Ming era. In the sweeping currents of history, countless unsung heroes - men with no grand ambitions who nonetheless accomplished great deeds - were never recorded in the chronicles. Their names were buried, much like their stories, beneath the resplendent palaces of imperial power.
