Bruce, now middle-aged, is struggling to raise money to keep the only horse ranch he owns. Wang Erde, his childhood friend with whom he has had no contact for more than a decade, calls and asks him to travel to Chongqing for a paid job involving the humane euthanasia of a horse. However, after arriving in Chongqing, Bruce discovers that the real task is not about a horse at all, but a "business" involving the assisted death of a terminally ill patient. After repeated hesitation, he finally decides to accept the job, only to uncover further hidden circumstances, leaving him caught in a moral dilemma.
