Xiaokui grew up by the sea, a top student from a small town. At seventeen, her world was free of smartphones and romance; it held only geography magazines and a large television. She adored distant idols and dreamed of faraway places. Then one day, Qiangwei, a girl from the city, transferred into her school and became her closest friend. And so, an “aurora” of change quietly descended upon this small town.

Familiar faces. A familiar life. An endless sea, and a future that felt predictable at a glance — could life’s answers really be found through the endless pages of practice tests? The girls had so many questions. That summer, sitting on a weathered fishing boat, they imagined that if they could fix it, perhaps they could finally leave this place.
