Forward Future
"Forward Future" Preview: In Beijing, One Step Ahead of the World
Every great director, before becoming a master, took that daring "first step" - the one bold enough to show the world something new. The power within is often the most intense and raw, but it pulses with the unbridled ambition needed to break through. The Forward Future is the perfect stage for emerging directors to unleash that transformative power.

As a section dedicated to new talents and debut works, organized by the Beijing Film Academy, the Forward Future solicits first and second feature films from directors around the world with different themes, genres, and styles. Since its establishment in 2014, it has been committed to "discovering the new filmmakers around the globe in China's view and encouraging originals on the new wave of films in the world", highlighting the cultural connotations of films in various forms and boosting the exchange and communication among young filmmakers all over the world.

If one word defines "Forward Future", it is newness. This year's selection elevates that standard further: every international title is either a World or International Premiere, and every entry is a debut feature. This focus on premiere status is not merely a pursuit of statistics; it is a commitment to offering Beijing audiences a sense of discovery unique to this festival that only "Forward Future" can offer. When the screen flickers to life, viewers enter a world untouched by spoilers, still undefined. In this space of the "newest", possibilities are infinite.

Previous Honor-Winning Films in the Forward Future
If "newness" is the defining feature of "Forward Future", then "diversity" is its most captivating essence. This year's lineup spans five continents and over ten countries and regions - from Northern Europe to Latin America, and from Africa to Southern Europe. Notably, the presence of Chinese cinema has expanded, introducing powerful, original voices from the domestic scene to the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF). The range of themes in the selected works is rich enough to satisfy your curiosity about the world: here you will find the hidden tensions within families, as well as love reimagined in contemporary contexts. You will encounter clever comedic concepts that make you laugh, and moments in thrillers that leave you breathless. Whether it is a delicate portrayal of female strength or a sharp analysis of social issues, these young filmmakers are using their keenest senses to explore every dimension of modern life.

More than a screening platform, "Forward Future" serves as a living archive of global cinematic growth. Looking back at previous editions, a number of remarkably vibrant works, such as Kaili Blues and Journey to the West, first met Beijing audiences in this very section. While these films carried the hallmarks of newcomers, it was their unguarded sincerity that resonated so deeply with audiences. This attention to and cultivation of new talent would not be possible without the discerning eyes of the seasoned filmmakers on the jury. In past editions, we have had the honor of inviting British critic Tony Rayns, Chinese director Ning Ying, Chinese director Pema Tseden, Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski, and Hungarian director Béla Tarr to serve as jury presidents. The jury has also included esteemed professionals such as Chinese actress Qi Xi, Malaysian director Tan Chui Mui, Chinese actor Song Yang, Chinese author Shuang Xuetao, Japanese director Kôji Fukada, and Chinese director Gu Xiaogang. These experienced filmmakers, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries, come together to discover the essential power of cinema. Here, we do not seek to mythologize the future; we simply bear witness to every earnest beginning.
