The “Magic Editing” Forum of the 15th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), jointly hosted by the China Cinema Editors Association and the Beijing Film Academy, will grandly open in the Library Auditorium of the Beijing Film Academy on April 19. As a signature event held for many consecutive years during the Beijing International Film Festival, the "Magic Editing" Forum has become a significant academic platform for the China Cinema Editors Association. During this trans-temporal “Magic Editing” dialogue, three international masters of cinematic editing - Nick Emerson, Jérôme Eltabet, and Robert Nassau, nominated for best editing at the 97th Academy Awards and the 75th Eddie Awards - will engage in a virtual dialogue with their counterparts in China.
The invaluable insights gleaned from these conversations will be meticulously curated into a video presentation, shared with forum attendees to illuminate the editing philosophies of these global luminaries, offering each participant a glimpse into the intricacies of world-class editorial thought. The Chinese editors who engage in the dialogues with these three international masters will further enrich the forum by sharing the profound insights and professional wisdom from their exchanges. The "Magic Editing" Keynote Session at the Domestic Film and Television Editing and Creation Forum will feature four editors from China's first-line commercial and art films, representing the diverse styles and innovative practices shaping contemporary Chinese film editing. Tu Yiran, Editing Director of Pegasus 2, Huangzeng Hongchen, Editing Director of Honey Money Phony, Zhang Yibo, Editing Director of A Tapestry of a Legendary Land, and Zhu Lin, Editing Director of Big World, will share their creative journeys, which span the realms of business and art, entertainment and humanism, embodying the rich possibilities within Chinese film editing.
In this keynote session, these four editors will offer their unique perspectives on film-making through the lens of editing: from how cinematic language shapes character emotions to how the interplay of sound and image constructs a film's rhythm; from how digital technology changes the editing workflow to how editing decisions influence the narrative trajectory.
