Tiantan Award Official Selection Media Catalogue Referees Announced, Shu Huan, Wang Chuanjun and Ni Hongjie Work with Professional Medial to Referee Quality Films Globally
Throughout the world’s leading international film festivals, the review of Media Catalogue referees on the films selected for the Competition section is one of the components that are of most interest among the audience and the industry. It serves as a “steering wheel” for movie evaluations and winner predictions, and it also is a weathervane for measuring the artistry and commercialism of a festival. After two years of evolution, the Media Catalogue, new to the Tiantan Award of the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) in 2021, has not only underpinned the professionalism of the BJIFF, but also grown into a new “weathervane” for predictions of the winners of films selected for the Competition section as well as the guidance for public viewing.
To further bolster the communication of the films shortlisted for the Tiantan Award and make more high-quality films worldwide recognized by the market and popular with the audience, this year’s Media Catalogue will be upgraded, again, to expand its review dimension, along with screenwriter Shu Huan, actor Wang Chuanjun and actress Ni Hongjie who have been invited to act as referees at the 13th BJIFF. These referees will provide unique insights into the shortlisted films from a diverse perspective as a screenwriter or an actor, augmenting the professionalism of these films.

Shu Huan, a screenwriter known for Call For Love, Lost in Thailand, and Lost in Hong Kong, was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 5th China Image Film Festival. And Lost in Thailand, a story written by him, took the 7th Asian Film Award for 2012’s Top Grossing Asian Film.

Actor Wang Chuanjun, whose representative works include The Wasted Times, Dying to Survive, Saturday Fiction, and Hidden Blade, won Best Actor at the 10th China Film Directors’ Guild Awards and Best Supporting Actor at the 35th People’s Hundred Flowers Awards. And Saturday Fiction starring him was nominated for the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Actress Ni Hongjie, with representatives like Silent Witness, Blue Sky Bones, A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower, and B for Busy, was nominated for the Best Actress award at the 8th Rome International Film Festival. And B for Busy starring her as Gloria was selected for the 27th Busan International Film Festival, where her superb performance and self-breaking expression impresses countless audiences and has made her win the hearts of the public.
In the Tiantan Award Official Selection Media Catalogue section of this year’s BJIFF, the three filmmakers will combine their rich creative experience in screenwriting or acting to offer more profound insights into the selected films, making a great addition to this year’s BJIFF with their professionalism and bringing a refreshing experience to the audience.

Filmmakers and media work together to referee high-quality films from all over the world, and to inspire the charm of film from diverse perspectives. This year, the Tiantan Award Official Selection Media Catalogue looks to create a multicultural feast of film in collaboration with professionals and critics from 10 media outlets or media official accounts including China Movie News, Yizhan Weekly of Beijing Daily, Beijing News Entertainment, World Screen, Phoenix New Media Ltd., DeepFocus, Pocket Film, as well as Lu Zhiyu, Falanxi Jiaopian, and Wusi Dianying. In the refereeing session, these professionals and critics will evaluate and score the films selected for the Tiantan Award and publish relevant reviews, with a more professional manner, more inclusiveness, and stricter criteria. By closely connecting films with the audience, this section aims at promoting the discovery and communication of more excellent films at home and abroad.

Let’s enjoy the best films in Beijing this spring, meet with professional filmmakers at the BJIFF, and build dreams for cinema together! We believe that professional perspectives, exquisite verbal statements, and sincere expressions will be a perfect definition of this year’s theme of “Sharing Culture, Shared Future”, and push the international identity, authority, and popularity of the BJIFF to new heights across the board, while advancing the high-quality development of the film industry with excellent films.
