Special Forum for Select IP of Science Fiction World: "Light and Shadow Dreams" Theme Salon
In 2023, the 81st World SF Convention will be held in Chengdu, China for the first time, and Hugo Award nominations are in full swing. The Organizing Committee of this year's Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), together with Sichuan Science Fiction World Magazine Co., Ltd., launched the Special Forum for Select IP of Science Fiction World on April 25.
As the largest sci-fi magazine in the world, Science Fiction World is the headquarters of original Chinese sci-fi texts, and a long-lasting leader in the sci-fi publishing industry.
Yang Xiao, A Lai and others have served the magazine president successively. Liu Cixin's novels, Three Body and The Wandering Earth, were both published for the first time on the magazine.
Three Body
In 2019, the film adapted from The Wandering Earth was screened during the Spring Festival and it was widely regarded as the beginning of the first year of Chinese sci-fi films. In 2018, Science Fiction World established an IP operation center to promote high-quality IPs into the market; in 2020, the China Science Fiction Industry Base was launched to promote the industrial transformation of sci-fi novels and transform the excellent publishing results in the past 40 years into excellent films and televisions. This project was included in the High Energy Industry Platform in the publishing industry by the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee of the CPC and the People's Government. In 2022, Science Fiction World jointly produced The Wandering Earth II, taking a further step into the film and television industry.

In this promotion meeting, the science fiction world promoter Wang Shanshan, Chen Yao and Tao Meicen introduced many top Chinese science fictions suitable for film adaptation, including Yiyu, The Age of God, Golden Peach, The Shrike and the Thorn, The Art and Soul: Interstellar Panda and Circle at Night.

After that, science fiction scholar Ren Dongmei, film and television producer Jiao Jing, film and television producer Yuan Bingtao, and sci-fi authors Yang Wanqing and Ren Qing were invited to bring a sci-fi salon entitled "Light and Shadow Dreams—Exploration on Localization of Sci-Fi Narratives and Styles". Senior panelists in the industry shared their views on the film adaptation of literary works and the localization strategy of domestic science fiction films.
